Jane M Rushton

Jane is an experienced civil litigation lawyer.

She works with clients to resolve legal disputes through court proceedings and/or alternative dispute resolution (ADR), including mediation and arbitration. Her guiding principles are:

• respectful communication

• personalised advocacy that empowers clients, and

• expertise, so clients can make informed decisions.

Jane has a special interest in resolving disputes involving contentious trusts, estates, and relationship property. She is presently undertaking the AMINZ Mediation Intensive Training to complement her legal experience of mediation and establish her practice as a mediator.

Born in Hamilton, Jane graduated LLB/BA (English) from the University of Auckland and was admitted in 1989. After 19 years in legal practice (15 in NZ and four in Australia) and eight years instructing litigation skills at IPLS, she joined Riverbank Chambers on 1 November 2022.

Jane’s advocacy experience was gained in small and medium-sized private law firms, as an in-house prosecutor in a Government Department, and as a Crown Prosecutor in 2021. She has represented clients in commercial, multi-party and/or personally difficult litigation including in arbitrations and mediations.

Jane has conducted defended hearings in the District Court, High Court, Family Court, and Employment Court and in other forums such as the Human Rights Review Tribunal, Employment Relations Authority, before the Parole Board and the now Alcohol Regulatory and Licensing Authority.
